MARINE ANIMAL RESCUER PETER WALLERSTEIN TO SPEAK AT AUGUST 10 DIVE CLUB MEETING |
|
For over 20 years, Marine Animal Rescue volunteers have come to the aid of entangled or beached whales, dolphins, seals, sea lions and sea birds along the California coast. Marine Animal Rescue volunteers have rescued thousands of marine animals.
Marine Animal Rescue works in cooperation with the Los Angeles County Lifeguards, Police, Fire and Animal Services Departments throughout Los Angeles County. MAR is a participant in the national whale disentanglement network. Marine Animal Rescue volunteers also conduct educational presentations and community outreach programs throughout Los Angeles County.
Marine Animal Rescue vigorously opposes the capture and confinement of healthy marine mammals. Recently, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA/NMFS) authorized MAR to design, construct and operate a second marine mammal care site in Los Angeles County, to rehabilitate hundreds of marine mammals each year. MAR director Peter Wallerstein said, "Under the authority granted by NOAA/NMFS to The Pacific Marine Mammal Care Center in Laguna Beach, we can ensure that each and every animal in our care receives the best medical attention, increasing their chances to be released back to their coastal habitat, healthy and strong
In years past, due to overcrowded conditions in California rehabilitation centers, some animals were unable to be rescued. This is changing.
The planned new site, at Dockweiler Beach in Playa Del Rey, will be designed by award-winning green architect David Hertz. The finished project will have heated floors, an indoor intensive care unit, and the latest in diagnostic and surgical equipment. It will further our knowledge of marine mammal health and serve as a marine mammal teaching hospital.
Peter will be presenting a slide show of some of his rescues and plans for the new marine mammal care center to be built in Playa Del Rey.
Dive Club meeting begins at 7pm, at Ocean Adventures. |
