RECORD AMOUNT RAISED DURING CHAMBER DAY & NIGHT 2008

This Just In! The proceeds from Chamber Day & Chamber Night have been tallied and a new record was set this year..$120,158 was raised to help fund the Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber. Ocean Adventures crewed the Sundiver and the Sundiver II during Chamber Day and filled two tables on Chamber night.

For those who were lucky enough to play hookey on Wednesday, May 7, the diving was great! Chamber Night saw our divers dressed up and sitting down for a lovely evening of good food and great raffle prizes, Joseph our Instructor was the lucky OADC table winner. The Sundiver collected a whopping seven of the Chamber Day prizes, including OADC diver Chris who won the Scuba Pro regulator!

Ocean Adventures Dive Co. is a big sponsor of this annual event on all levels and you can be a part of it next year, look for the newsletter and sign up for a seat at the Chamber Night OADC tables or get your gear and get on a Chamber Day boat. It's great fun for an even greater cause.

ARCH ROCK COVE - ANACAPA ISLAND
    Diver

Arch Rock on the east end of Anacapa Island is the symbol of the Channel Islands National Park. Its beauty as a surface feature is unparalleled along the California coastline. It is 80 feet high, surrounded by rock pinnacles, and dangerous reefs. The bark of sea lions, cry of gulls and roar of the sea are constant. It is truly a serene place for anybody who loves the California ocean and the Channel Islands. This is the closest point of the Channel Islands to the mainland - a mere 11 miles. You'd never know; it seems a world away

Anacapa Island is the second smallest of all the Channel Islands, only slightly larger than tiny Santa Barbara Island to the southeast. Anacapa is actually a long narrow chain of three islands separated by narrow impassible waters. Arch Rock is at the extreme east end of the east island. As such, it is located at a point of transition between the calm frontside and often rough open ocean. It also lies where, depending on direction, powerful currents are split or joined

This is an exciting place. On the south side of Arch Rock, reefs, pinnacles and the arch form a pocket resembling a cove. Waters swirl and mix creating a nutrient rich soup that marine animals love. It is a place of beauty underwater

This is a good spot for seeing nudibranchs. Look for yellow dorids, Spanish shawls and hermessenda. With this many nudibranchs, their primary predator can't be far behind. Navanax is a brightly colored sea slug that feeds on its nudibranch cousin. Another sea slug in abundance here is the sea hare. They feed simply on algae

    BACK-TO-BACK BOATS ANACAPA AND CATALINA

It's time to get your gear and come aboard next weekend May 17th & 18th. Ocean Adventures chartered the Peace (out of Ventura Harbor) Saturday, May 17 to Anacapa and the Sundiver (out of Long Beach) Sunday, May 18 to Catalina.

For those of you wanting to take the next step after Open Water, with our back-to-back boat trips you will be able to complete your Advanced Course in just one weekend! Joseph will be teaching this course, call him at OADC for details.

If you are just looking to get in the water again, the Captain of the Peace reports the sea lions at Anacapa's rookery have been swimming out to play with divers. Captain Ray of the Sundiver always finds the best spots around Catalina to cater to every diver on board. Two great locations in one weekend!

To sign up for your Advanced Course or book a trip on these boats - call Ocean Adventures at 310.578.9391.

SHARKWATER - COMING TO A DIVE CLUB MEETING NEAR YOU!
    SharkWater

It's Movie Night at the May 13, Ocean Adventures Dive Club Meeting, featuring the critically-acclaimed documentary "Sharkwater." Ocean Adventures will provide the movie, popcorn, red wines, soda and hot dogs (vegan dogs will also be served).

Driven by passion fed from a lifelong fascination with sharks, Stewart debunks historical stereotypes and media depictions of sharks as bloodthirsty, man- eating monsters and reveals the reality of sharks as pillars in the evolution of the seas. Filmed in visually stunning, high definition video, Sharkwater takes you into the most shark rich waters of the world, exposing the exploitation and corruption surrounding the world's shark populations in the marine reserves of Cocos Island, Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador.

In an effort to protect sharks, Stewart teams up with renegade conservationist Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Their unbelievable adventure together starts with a battle between the Sea Shepherd and shark poachers in Guatemala, resulting in pirate boat rammings, gunboat chases, mafia espionage, corrupt court systems and attempted murder charges, forcing them to flee for their lives. Through it all, Stewart discovers these magnificent creatures have gone from predator to prey, and how despite surviving the earth's history of mass extinctions, they could easily be wiped out within a few years due to human greed.

Stewart's remarkable journey of courage and determination changes from a mission to save the world's sharks, into a fight for his life, and that of humankind.
